Puppeteers – Volunteers are needed to help The Arc present a disability awareness show for Chester County elementary school students. Hand and rod puppets are used to educate elementary school-aged students about children with disabilities and diversity. Training, including scripts, is provided. Scheduled performances are dependent upon requests and held during and after school hours, as well as some evenings. Generally, one hour of volunteer time per performances. ABBLE Classroom Assistants – Two volunteers are needed to provide support to the ABBLE program, a classroom-based program for two-year-olds with autism located in Downingtown. Availability most Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM and a Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance are required. For more information, call Kathy Fox at 610-696-8090, ext. 339.
Advocacy Program Volunteers – Volunteers are needed to help advocacy programs in a variety of capacities. Many of these tasks can be completed at home with the option of working from The Arc’s West Chester office. Opportunities include updating a monthly e-newsletter and assisting with its distribution and serving as a special education advocate. Committee Members – The Arc has numerous committees that need the expertise of volunteers from the community. Committees usually meet monthly during night or daytime hours convenient to the members. Some areas of need include people with human resources skills to assist the personnel committee; accountants or financial analysts to assist the finance committee; and marketers or fundraisers to assist the community relations and development committees. Our Friend Mikayla Story Time -Our Friend Mikayla, written by Mikayla’s third-grade classmates, is a true story about a third-grader student with disabilities. The book is read to elementary school-aged children to educate them about children with disabilities and diversity. Book and story time snack are provided by The Arc. Generally, one hour of volunteer time is required per scheduled reading. Scheduled story times vary depending on school/ organization requests. First Step Early Intervention Program- First Step Early Intervention program seeks volunteers to assist with swimming sessions at Lionville or West Chester YMCA’s each Friday from 10:00 AM to Noon. Volunteers under the guidance of skilled staff and therapists, will assist preschool children who have disabilities, ages 2 to 5, with swimming activities. Volunteers are also needed to assist teachers and students with Art and Music Therapy on a weekly basis at The Arc’s preschool location on Lawrence Drive in West Chester. Community Habilitation Program Assistance- Community Habilitation program seeks volunteers of all ages to assist with weekly recreational and social gathering on Wednesday evenings based at The Arc’s facility in West Chester. Opportunities are available for weekend activities that include dances, dinners, sporting events, community outings, and other fun-filled entertainment. Volunteer teen counselors are also needed for one- week summer camps. Assist camp counselors and Arc staff at week-long summer day camp. Camp is located at Paradise Farms in Downingtown. Camps are held one week in June and two weeks in August. Volunteers hours are form 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Opportunities also available to support Fun Club for kids ages 8-12 and Teen Club for teens ages 13-17. Activities take place one Saturday a month. Times vary with scheduled events. Administrative Support- Administrative support opportunities are available in one to two hour sessions or as needed during flexible daytime hours between 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM to support large mailing preparations: addressing, stuffing and stamping envelopes, filing, internet research and database updates. and miscellaneous office support. Special Events- The Development and Community Relations Committee seeks volunteers to support special events held by The Arc of Chester County throughout the year. Events include the annual Achievement Walk, Run and Fun Day held the second Saturday of June, the Annual Golf Outing held the fourth Monday in September, Breakfast with Santa held the first Saturday in December, and other events held throughout the year.
